Luka Young from PAK’nSAVE Kaitaia has won the esteemed Pact Packaging Young Butcher of the Year title and Morgan Moore from New World in Motueka was crowned ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice of the Year.

A Hawke’s Bay butchery has been announced as the Supreme Winner in both bacon and ham categories of the 100% New Zealand Bacon & Ham Awards. Wild Game in Hastings has taken out New Zealand’s top bacon award with their middle eye/loin entry and New Zealand’s best ham award for their boneless ham.

The Hellers Sharp Blacks have won third place at the World Butchers’ Challenge in Sacramento held over the weekend. The team, made up of six Kiwi butchers, travelled to the U.S.A. last week to compete against 12 other countries in a three-and-a-half-hour showdown at the Golden 1 Centre in Sacramento.

Butchers across the country are urging the government to allow them to reopen under strict Covid protocol and serve their communities. Currently, under Alert Level 4, independent butchers are only allowed to operate contactless deliveries – a position unviable for many operators.
