Celebrating New Zealand’s best butcher apprentice

The ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice of the Year Competition is run with the Pact Packaging Young Butcher and Pure South Master Butcher of the Year Competitions. The event is open to anyone currently enrolled in a butchery apprenticeship and we encourage first, second and third-year apprentices to put themselves forward and give it their best shot. Not only does the competition put you to the test, but it also highlights to your peers, employers and the rest of the industry that you are serious about butchery. Like the Pact Packaging Young Butcher, the competition begins with regional competitions where the entrants are required to compete in a practical cutting test.

The winner from each regional competition then progresses through to the Grand Final in Auckland. At the Grand Final, the ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice competitors will again be tested with a practical cutting test, but in addition a multiple choice exam and a short interview.

The Grand Prize for the winner of the ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice of the Year is not only the glory of this title, the trophy, and a knife set but also an all-expenses paid trip to the World Butchers Challenge and the opportunity to be selected into the ANZCO Foods Young Butchers of New Zealand Squad to compete at the World Champion Butcher Apprentice and Young Butcher competitions.

If you are aiming to be a Hellers Sharp Black, then this is the foundation you need to be recognised by our industry. Competing alone is a huge achievement, not to mention an incredible opportunity to open the door for future opportunities.
