PETER MARTIN RECOGNISED WITH PRESTIGIOUS CHRISTIE AWARD

Peter Martin has been named the 14th recipient of the Christie Award, one of the highest honours in New Zealand’s retail meat industry. Named in honour of Geof Christie, a butcher and polytechnic tutor whose passion for his trade was tireless, the award recognises a lifetime of contribution to the promotion, growth and strength of the New Zealand meat industry. It is presented to those who stand at the pinnacle of the trade.

Peter’s career spans more than 30 years and began as a clean-up boy, sweeping floors after school before completing his butchery apprenticeship at a New World on the Hibiscus Coast. Over the years, he has worked across retail butchery, training and education, smallgoods manufacturing and business ownership, gaining a broad understanding of the industry and its people.

A significant part of Peter’s legacy is his contribution to butchery training in New Zealand. During the introduction of unit standards in the 1990s, he helped develop the butchery standards, learning resources and assessment tools that continue to shape apprenticeship training today. He was part of a group that helped establish a framework that has supported generations of apprentices in developing the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the trade.

Peter has mentored hundreds of apprentices and butchers throughout his career, many of whom have gone on to own their own businesses, train apprentices and contribute to the industry themselves. Known for his generosity, empathy and willingness to help, Peter has consistently put the development of others first, sharing his knowledge and experience to strengthen the future of the profession.

His commitment also extends to butchery competitions, where he has judged at regional, national and international levels. Peter is passionate about the opportunities competitions provide for butchers to challenge themselves, develop their skills and learn from others. In 2011, he was selected as the first member of the New Zealand National Butchery Team, the Sharp Blacks, and still proudly holds the number one shirt.

Reflecting on the honour of receiving the award, Peter Martin shared, “I am honestly surprised. I thought I had another decade of work to do before I would even be considered for something I hold as a taonga.

“I’m truly humbled, knowing Geoff, those who worked with him and all of the previous recipients of the award.  I love the people in this industry and their passion for a craft I believe is awesome.”

Peter remains at the centre of butchery training today, leading the national apprentice team at Skills4Work and serving as head judge of the Pact Packaging Young Butcher and ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice competitions. More than thirty years in, he is still shaping the butchers who will follow him.

Peter joins an esteemed list of Christie Award recipients whose service and dedication have helped shape New Zealand’s retail meat industry. From his beginnings sweeping the floors of a butchery to helping shape the training of generations of butchers, Peter’s legacy lies in the people he has supported and the lasting influence he has had on the trade.
