Welcome to the Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition

The aim of the competition is to seek out New Zealand's best and tastiest sausages - giving New Zealanders access to more variety and greater quality sausages.

With over 480 sausages from 90 stores being judged, the competition sees the Kiwi classic push the flavour boundaries and explore innovation.

Sausage makers from across the country will be perfecting their recipes in the hopes of being announced the 2019 Supreme Winner.


Throughout this year’s competition, the standard has been phenomenal. Flavours have been well thought through, the quality of the butchery has been impeccable and as a result it has created a really tough, but enjoyable, job for the judges.

A humble and versatile ingredient, the sausage can be used in many different ways. To name a few - barbecued, fried, curried, Toad in the Hole, in pastas, devilled, sausage rolls and hot dogs.

2018 MEDALISTS BY LOCATION

 
 

The Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition has been seeking out New Zealand's tastiest snarlers since 1996. Today, there are 13 categories in the competition, ranging from traditional to gourmet. 

Our delightful judges are a combination of butchers, industry experts, food writers and chefs, who spend days anonymously  judging the sausage entries within their categories, in both fresh and cooked form. Judges assess the entries based on visual appeal, flavour, texture and composition and award Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. All Gold winners progress to the second round of judging, which determines the Supreme Winner.

To guarantee the validity of the individual sausages, we mystery shop samples. These shopped samples are then judged alongside their corresponding sausage entry so that judges can confirm consumers are able to buying the medal winning sausages in stores.

This competition celebrates a Kiwi classic. There aren’t many New Zealanders out there that would go through the summer season without indulging in at least one sizzling sausage, whether that be at the local hardware store, at the beach or on their dinner plate.

EVENT DETAILS

ENTRIES OPEN: 4 June 2019

JUDGING: Category Judging takes place in Auckland from 3-10 September.

FINAL JUDGING: All gold medal wining product will be mystery shopped between 16 - 18 September. The final judging will be held in Auckland on Wednesday 25 September. 

PEOPLE’S CHOICE: The top six scoring products will progress through to the People's Choice, taking place in Auckland on Thursday 26 September.

AWARDS DINNER: The award presentation  will take place on Thursday 17 October.
